Rubén Salgado Escudero:
In February of 2011, I had the privilege of living in—and immersing myself in the streets of—Pavão-Pavãozinho, a group of favelas that border the South Zone of Rio De Janeiro. I stayed there with an open mind, and was invited to meet some of the most heartily and diversely interesting people I have come across in all of my travels. Life in Rio's favelas is lived mostly on the street, where your neighbors are your family, and where sharing and looking out for one another is second nature. Within the intertwining alleys, filled with hot pavement, aged brick, and endless labyrinths of electrical wires, is a pulse, a constantly present beat. In these streets breathes so much heart, so much energy, vitality, and warmth. Sure, life is hard—it ain't always easy—but an essential philosophy runs through that life: Always look forward, stand straight and most important, never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up.
